Terminator Genisys is an American science fiction film directed by Alan Taylor and distributed by Paramount Pictures. It’s a soft reboot of the Terminator franchise taking the basic story of the first movie in a new direction. It of course stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, and other names such as Jason Clarke, Emilia Clarke (not related), Jai Courtney, and Matt Smith. It was released in the US on July 1st, 2015. Now without further ado, let’s dive into Terminator Genisys.
Story: The movie starts off in the future after Judgment Day where Skynet and the machines took over the Earth. John Connor leads a resistance to stop the machines with his right-hand man Kyle Reese. Skynet is taken out, but it sends back a Terminator to kill John Connor’s mother, Sarah, to keep John from being born and change history. They send back Kyle Reese to protect Sarah from the Terminator, but what ends up happening is that Sarah is already capable of taking care of herself and has on her side a T-800 Terminator that has been protecting her since childhood.
So Kyle Reese finds out that Sarah and Pops (Yes she named the Terminator) have a time machine to go to 1997 to stop Judgment Day from happening. But wait, time has actually been rewritten (The Doctor was always telling us it could be) and the actual Judgment Day doesn’t start until 2017 so they travel to 2017 where they meet… John Connor! Dun! Dun! Dun!
But wait! There’s more! John was actually turned into a T-1000 Terminator and now works for Skynet turning him into a bad guy! Which would have been an awesome plot twist if it wasn’t for the fact the advertisements and covers of the dang movie reveals his plot twist before you even watch the freaking movie! What the heck, guys?
Then there’s the Doctor - I mean Matt Smith - I mean Skynet. Well, he claims to be Skynet, but nobody knows what he actually is or who sent him back to take out John. Just like nobody knows who sent Pops back, except that it’s someone who clearly wants Sarah to live. All of these questions and more will never be answered throughout the film, but more on that later.
As you can probably guess, they succeed in taking out Skynet and the movie ends on a high note. Except the fact that the holographic Skynet survived so they really didn’t take out Skynet and Judgment Day might still happen, but I haven’t seen the sixth Terminator movie so I have no idea how they continue the story, but I have a feeling that they don’t at all.
Characters: The characters are all pretty tight. Kyle Reese falls in love with Sarah and Sarah struggles with having no real control over her life because things have already been set in stone. Pops is hilarious and John Connor is someone you could have a beer with while still being a wonderful villain you want to see get slain.
The main ones to follow are really Kyle, Sarah, and John. Their transformations through the story are good and carry the movie. Pops is good too for a laugh or few and of course Arnold can still kick butt even today. The minor characters work their part too and I wish Matt Smith’s character could have had a bigger role, but they at least did a good job of keeping his role secret going into the movie.
Special Effects: Okay, the special effects are cool. The action is good and keeps you at the edge of your seat. Of course it’s a Terminator movie so you can expect lots of action, but not at the expense of a good story.
Flaws: Okay, let’s kick things on the head. They don’t explain who sent Pops back, they don’t explain who sends the Skynet android, or whatever he is, back. It’s just a hand wave to the audience. Now on the plus side that could generate some interesting discussion, but on the other side it’s a flaw in the story that I don’t think is ever going to be answered. It doesn’t take away too much from the film, but it’s a glaring hole in the movie.
Summary: Overall Terminator Genisys is an enjoyable action movie with a good, yet flawed, story and interesting characters. This may be an unpopular opinion, but I find Terminator Genisys to be one of the better Terminator movies. Not as good as the first two, but still a better sequel than T3 and Salvation. If you’re curious to see what this soft reboot is like, then go right ahead and…
Get it!
