Super Mario Bros is a platforming game developed and published by Nintendo and put on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in late 1985. It features Mario and his younger brother Luigi as they traverse the Mushroom Kingdom to save Princess Toadstool from the evil Bowser. It went on to span many sequels, spinoffs, a longtime franchise, cartoons, and even a feature film. Without further ado this is Super Mario Bros.
Gameplay: The gameplay mechanics of Super Mario Bros are rather easy to understand. You have two main buttons, a button to jump and a button to run. The goal is to jump on enemies to defeat them and break bricks with a question mark on them for coins and power ups.
One of the three power ups are a mushroom which makes Mario bigger and able to break solid bricks, a fire flower which changes Mario’s colors and allows him to shoot fireballs, and a Starman which makes Mario temporarily invulnerable to all enemies.
There are eight worlds in the game overall. Each world has four levels with the fourth stage in each world being a castle level where Mario takes on Bowser (the first seven being fake Bowsers) and progresses to the next world. There are a couple of underwater levels and underground levels where you can find warp pipes that skips to another world as a means to beat the game faster.
There are also some warp pipes you can go down which leads to an underground area with coins, or more underwater level goodness. You can also find vines in bricks which lead to a bonus stage. There is a timer on each level and if time runs out that will cost Mario a life. He can also die falling through pits no matter what form he’s in.
You can even find secret blocks for extra lives or more points. Another way to get an extra life is by earning one-hundred gold coins. In the multiplayer mode the second player can play the same stages as Luigi after the first player plays Mario in that stage and you can compare points with one another.
The enemies are also very memorable. Like the Goombas which you stomp on and the Koopa Troopa, but the one I hate the most are the Hammer Bros. The turtles that throw hammers at you from a platform. They cost me many super forms.
Once you beat the game you can play the game over under a much higher difficulty setting where the Goombas are replaced by Buzzy Beetles, which are enemies you can only take out by jumping on them.
Story: It’s 1985 so there isn’t much in the way of story, but there is a synopsis. Basically Bowser’s forces invade the Mushroom Kingdom turning its citizens into bricks and stones and kidnap Princess Peach who is the only one who can reverse the spell by Bowser. Mario hears the news and sets out to save Princess Peach and the Mushroom Kingdom.
Graphics: The graphics have actually aged rather well for being a game made clear back in 1985. Now there isn’t much difference to Mario and Luigi besides a color swap, but everything else is well defined and brightly colorful. They’ve redone the graphics on the SNES for Super Mario All Stars, but there’s something about the original graphics that is still wonderful to look at even to this day.
Flaws: There isn’t much in the way of flaws in this game even despite being over thirty years old. When you die you know it’s because you messed up and not anything to do with the game itself. It’s as close to perfect as a video game can hope to be.
Summary: Super Mario Bros remains to be a fun platforming game that’s easy to get the hang of and play. Its graphics are colorful, the music is amazing, and the sound is really good. Mario stands the test of time as one of the best video games ever made and it’s still playable even to this day.
