San Francisco Rush Extreme Racing is a racing video game developed and published by Midway Games and ported to the Nintendo 64. Originally an arcade game, Rush came out in North America on December 24, 1996, and was released for the Nintendo 64 console one year later. Today we’ll be taking a look at the Nintendo 64 version of the game. This is San Francisco Rush Extreme Racing.
Gameplay: The game features six cars racing through the city of San Francisco to a race to the finish. There is however a time limit that counts down and you need to reach checkpoints and the finish line to increase the number on the clock. Otherwise the race will end. There are also a lot of explosions. If you run right into a wall or flip over the car will explode like you’re watching a Michael Bay action flick.
There are six tracks to choose from which can be flipped and mirrored to make the track more difficult. You can select your car which also has its own difficulty level and pick what color you want before you begin a race. You can also pick between automatic and manual, and trust me when I tell you you’ll want to pick automatic. The car drives so slow on a manual.
The game has a few modes to choose from. There’s One Race which allows you to just dive in and race against the computer or a friend, Circuit which is like Nascar going from one track to the next trying to be the best you can be. The last is practice where you just try not to suck at the game.
At the end of the game you get a pretty cool tune that goes, “What’s your name?” while you’re putting in your name for the top score. It also plays at the end of races in Circuit as they’re giving you a ridiculously long code to put in to pick up your progress at a later time.
Hitting other cars and walls can damage your car. Even if you blow up during a race you’ll just respawn and have to try to get back to your spot in the race. The funny thing is even computer cars will sometimes crash and burn too, so it’s not just you that’s having a hard time staying on the road. You can even pick up so much speed you can fly through the air like you have wings.
Story: This game has even less story than Road Rash. There are no characters or anything. It’s just cars racing against each other to get to the finish. No surprise there.
Graphics: The graphics are pretty neat looking despite how much time has past since the game was released for the N64. I never played the arcade or PlayStation version so I can’t compare. You can tell apart your cars from others and see all the environments in the city you race in. The first track where you go down the Golden Gate Bridge is very beautiful and breathtaking. About as good as an introduction to a game as you can possibly get.
Flaws: Like I said already, picking manual is pretty dense, and sometimes it’s way too easy to crash and burn. Making you wonder if it’s your fault or the game’s. Apart from that there isn’t much in the way of flaws to this game. It’s a pretty good straightforward racing game just trying to be fun and out of this world.
Summary: Overall the game is a lot of fun and a big treat to racing fans. If you enjoy games with fast cars, flying through the air, secret passageways, and crashing, then look no further than San Francisco Rush Extreme Racing.
Get It!
